Yas Island

Arguably the most well-known island in the capital, Yas Island is the go-to location for top-class sporting events and concerts. Each year, the island hosts the last race of the Formula One season; a weekend steeped in prestige and exclusivity. Not only do visitors and residents get to see the apex of the F1 season, but the weekend also attracts a who’s who of celebrities, in addition to entertainment provided by some of the world’s greatest acts. In 2024, Eminem played on the Saturday evening after qualifying, while Shania Twain and Foo Fighters played the year before.
Yas Island is also home to the Etihad Arena, which hosts top-class events such as UFC, in addition to boxing – Floyd Mayweather has fought at the stadium in the past – as well as touring bands such as Guns ‘n Roses, who featured at the venue in 2023.
With the top-class Yas Links Abu Dhabi golf course, which hosts the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championships, visitors can take advantage of high-end hotels such as the Hilton, W Abu Dhabi and the Radisson Blu. The island is also home to three top-class theme parks, which add to the family-friendly atmosphere of the island.
With all this and more, Yas Island has a strong claim for the title of Abu Dhabi’s best island.

Saadiyat Island

A hotspot of culture, Saadiyat Island is home to esteemed venues such as Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The Abrahamic Family House functions as the very first interfaith building of its kind in the world, incorporating the Eminence Ahmed El-Tayeb Mosque, St.Francis Church, and Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue. The island is also home to Zayed National Museum, which stands as a huge cultural landmark.
Life moves a touch slower on this islet – located north of the main part of the city – and in addition to the world-class museums on offer, the island is also home to some exceptional beach resorts.
The St. Regis Saadiyat Island, Saadiyat Rotana and Jumeirah Saadiyat Island all offer exclusive resort-style accommodations, in addition to some of the best amenities in the city. Also home to Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Al Saadiyat Island is the place to be for those who value a slightly more relaxed atmosphere.

Al Reem Island

Primarily a residential island, Al Reem represents a core area for high-net-worth individuals. The island offers excellent infrastructure and access to amenities, positioning it as an outstanding choice for those looking to buy property in the city.
It boasts unparalleled access to surrounding islands, with multiple bridge crossings to Al Maryah Island, in addition to Umm Yifenah Island and Abu Dhabi Island. The neighbourhood also features Al Fay Park and Reem Central Park, ideal for those with young families. Reem Mall and Paragon Bay Mall further enhance the area, while a range of top-class restaurants can be found hidden among the island’s waterfront promenades and residential enclaves.
Developments such as Reem Hills and One Reem Island are just a couple of the most in-demand projects on the island, with plenty of properties selling for upwards of AED 15,000,000. All of this combines to position Al Reem Island as arguably the best offshore residential location in the city.

Al Maryah Island

Al Maryah is to shopping and retail what Saadiyat is to culture. The island is home to The Galleria – a vast complex housing Galleria Mall and high-end hotels such as Rosewood Abu Dhabi and Four Seasons Abu Dhabi. With a range of top-class restaurants including Zuma, 99 Sushi Bar, Bentley Kitchen and Butcher & Still, the island is well-stocked when it comes to places to eat.
Galleria Mall itself stands as one of the best shopping destinations in the whole city. Brands such as Gucci, Hermes, Chanel and Cartier can all be found here – the ideal day out for those looking to treat themselves to something nice.
Abu Dhabi Global Market – located in The Galleria complex – functions as the capital’s answer to DIFC in Dubai; a major regional financial hub responsible for some of the country’s biggest real estate and business deals.
Al Maryah Island is also one of the city’s locales that has been earmarked as a future enclave for ultra-high-net-worth individuals and is currently undergoing various development projects. For those looking to invest in property in Abu Dhabi, there are much worse options than Al Maryah Island.

Al Hudayriat Island

Similar to Saadiyat Island but a little less developed, Al Hudayriat is ideal for those looking for recreation and leisure activities. The island is home to various campsites such as Bab Al Nojoum, as well as beaches and heritage trails, serving as the perfect location to take a load off while still within easy reach of the city. Circuit X Adventure Park is an adventure sports centre which offers a range of adrenaline-inducing activities – a great option for those with children.

Mangrove Marine National Park

While not accessible by road, Mangrove Marine National Park is surrounded by water, and thus qualifies as one of the best islands in Abu Dhabi thanks to its abundance of wildlife.
The park boasts a wide variety of bird species, which stop off on their migration journey thanks to the feeding potential of the area. With a massive seasonal population of Greater Flamingo in excess of 4,000, the island is best seen by kayak – which can be rented in two-hour slots from nearby hotels.

Sir Baniyas Island

Located in the Arabian Gulf, more than an hour away from the city, Sir Baniyas Island is only accessible by air or sea and as such, boasts a pristine natural environment.
The island is home to some of the country’s most stunning wildlife, most important historical sites and some of the most picturesque resorts. More than half of this unique area has been dedicated to the preservation of wildlife, through the designation of the Arabian Wildlife Park which houses more than 17,000 free-roaming animals. Home to a huge population of oryx, giraffes, gazelles, hyenas and even cheetahs, Sir Baniyas is the sort of place that simply demands attention. Guests can experience the wildlife through nature safaris, which can be booked from Danat Resort Jebel Dhanna on the mainland.
The island is also home to the UAE’s only discovered Christian monastery, thought to be more than 1,400 years old, but long since abandoned.

Whether you're drawn to the cultural richness of Saadiyat, the retail and entertainment options on Al Maryah, or the residential charm of Al Reem, Abu Dhabi’s islands each offer a unique experience. Together, they form a diverse and dynamic cityscape where modern living meets natural beauty and heritage. Ultimately, the best island comes down to what you value most – be it lifestyle, leisure, or location. One thing is certain: in Abu Dhabi, there’s an island to suit every taste.

Al Maryah: A Brief History

Previously known as Sowwah Island, Al Maryah has, historically, been uninhabited, functioning as a sandbank northwest of the city. In 2012, amid a strong rebranding effort, the area changed its name and a robust period of redevelopment was launched. Taking its new name from the native Al Maryah Arabian Deer, which calls the area home, the island covers an impressive 114 hectares (more than 200 football fields).
Construction of the area we now know as Abu Dhabi Global Market Square began in 2007, and the area has steadily grown to become an integral part of the island, representing a major Middle Eastern financial hub comparable to that of DIFC in Dubai. The complex also extended to The Galleria, which we will discuss at length in the next section.
Despite these significant initiatives, the area as a whole remains somewhat undeveloped when compared with other areas of the city, with more projects set for development in the coming years.

Al Maryah Central offers shoppers another refined option. Designed as a multi-level vertical retail experience, the facility is housed around a central plaza and boasts major department stores, an open-air food hall with almost 150 dining options, a multi-screen cinema and a rooftop park, among other things.
Furthermore, the island is home to the Al Maryah Island Promenade, a lengthy 5.4km stretch ideal for those looking to get some steps in. The walkway offers sweeping views back across the water towards Abu Dhabi and presents plenty of restaurants and cafes from which to enjoy the view.
Greenery is a key feature of the cay, and families can enjoy the verdant parks on offer. Al Maryah Island Family Park sits at the southern edge of the islet and features a children’s play area, while Family Park Galleria – located on level 2 of Galleria Mall – presents family-friendly fun for all.

Reimagined Island Living

While Al Maryah Island is still undergoing development, the long-term vision is for it to become Abu Dhabi’s new central business district. The area already features a number of established financial and retail hubs, and with several premium residential projects emerging in recent years, the island is poised to welcome a growing number of residents.
Projects such as Al Maryah Vista, The Four Seasons Private Residences and the St Regis Residences are just some of the exclusive projects on offer, but with many more developments scheduled to break ground in the coming years, the area will soon be known as one of the most exclusive residential areas in not just the city, but the UAE as a whole.

Final Thoughts

Al Maryah Island has gone from strength to strength in recent years. The area is now seen as a strong competitor to Abu Dhabi’s traditional financial and residential areas. And with more to come in the next few years, the neighbourhood offers strong investment potential.
For those looking to expand their portfolio, the district has several off-plan projects currently underway, and with the island earmarked as the next big thing where Abu Dhabi neighbourhoods are concerned, there are many worse options available.

The Abrahamic Family House: A Beacon of Unity and Faith in Abu Dhabi

Explore the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi—a symbol of unity where Islam, Christianity, and Judaism come together in faith, dialogue, and peace.

In a world often marked by division, where differences can too easily harden into discord, there emerges a place that offers a powerful counter-narrative — one of unity, dialogue, and profound respect. At the very heart of Abu Dhabi, the Abrahamic Family House rises not just as an architectural masterpiece but as a powerful symbol of faith and the shared stories that bring us together.
This extraordinary complex, conceived and championed by the visionary leadership of the UAE, is more than a cultural landmark; it is a luminous symbol of coexistence in the 21st century. Here, three distinct faith traditions- Islam, Christianity, and Judaism find space to worship, reflect, and engage in conversation under one harmonious roof.

A Vision Rooted in Peace and Dialogue

The Abrahamic Family House traces its inspiration to one of the oldest shared legacies on the planet — the faith of Abraham, revered across these three religions as a patriarch and a symbol of monotheistic devotion. This interfaith complex, located on Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District, embodies a vision articulated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan: to foster “common understanding, dialogue and respect among the three religions.”
In an era marked by cultural clashes and geopolitical tensions, the project speaks eloquently of the UAE’s commitment to tolerance as a pillar of its society and a cornerstone of its soft power. It represents a modern, hopeful narrative, one where spiritual heritage serves not as a barrier but a bridge.

Blending Tradition with Contemporary Architecture

The Abrahamic Family House comprises three houses of worship: a mosque, a church, and a synagogue, each designed by a world-class architect with an eye toward heritage and innovation.
The mosque, inspired by the intricate geometry of Islamic art, rises with flowing curves and soft white tones that evoke tranquility and spiritual purity. Its design blends traditional Arab architectural elements with unmistakably contemporary features, allowing natural light to dance across its surfaces in a way that feels almost divine. Nearby, the church, designed by the acclaimed architect David Adjaye, stands as a celebration of light and space, with soaring vertical lines and a striking façade that is both solemn and uplifting. Inside, the interplay of shadow and illumination invites visitors to reflect on history, faith, and hope. The synagogue complements this ensemble with an intimate space crafted with careful attention to Jewish symbolism and heritage, embracing minimalism and warmth through the use of natural materials and a thoughtful balance of form and function that honors its sacred purpose. Together, these three structures do not merely coexist but engage in a meaningful dialogue; their placement and design foster interaction and visual harmony, encouraging visitors to explore and reflect on both shared values and distinct identities.

The Cultural District: A Growing Hub of Intellectual and Artistic Exchange

The Abrahamic Family House is an integral part of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, a place that is fast becoming the city’s intellectual and artistic heartbeat. Here, alongside the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim Museum, this interfaith complex enriches the tapestry of culture and dialogue.
The site includes not only places of worship but also a Visitor Centre and a Common House — dedicated to interfaith dialogue, educational programs, and community gatherings. These spaces are designed to inspire learning and empathy, hosting lectures, exhibitions, and events that foster conversation across faiths and cultures.
This commitment to education and community engagement echoes the UAE’s broader ethos of openness and innovation, where tradition meets a cosmopolitan outlook.

Experience the Abrahamic Family House

To walk through the grounds of the Abrahamic Family House is to embark on a journey of discovery — spiritual, cultural, and architectural. Visitors are invited to witness rituals, explore sacred spaces, and engage with ideas that have shaped civilizations.
Guided tours offer insights into the theological and historical significance of each house of worship, while quiet moments within their walls invite introspection. The serene gardens, filled with native flora and shaded pathways, provide a contemplative environment that encourages mindfulness and peace.
For residents and visitors alike, the Abrahamic Family House offers a sanctuary from the bustle of city life. It is where the universal values of compassion, humility, and understanding are quietly celebrated.

A Model for Global Harmony

What sets the Abrahamic Family House apart is not merely its architectural grandeur or its cultural significance but the spirit it embodies: that of shared humanity. In a region often mischaracterised by conflict, Abu Dhabi’s bold vision stands as a beacon of hope.
The project reflects a broader ambition within the UAE to position itself as a global hub for dialogue and diplomacy, transcending geopolitical divides to champion coexistence. It is a reminder that faith can unite when approached with openness and respect.
This initiative has garnered international attention, inspiring similar projects worldwide and fostering conversations about the power of interfaith collaboration in building a peaceful future.

The Abrahamic Family House and the Spirit of Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is a city of many layers, where desert meets sea, tradition meets innovation, and the past is in constant conversation with the future. The Abrahamic Family House is an elegant embodiment of this spirit.
It echoes the city’s ethos of ambition grounded in respect, luxury intertwined with humility, and progress built on a foundation of culture. Just as the gleaming skyscrapers stretch skyward, the Abrahamic Family House stretches across centuries of faith and culture to offer a vision of unity and hope.
For those seeking more than sightseeing, this complex offers a profound experience: a rare glimpse into how a nation chooses to define itself in the modern world, not just through commerce or architecture, but through the courage to embrace diversity and build harmony.
Visitors are welcome to explore the Abrahamic Family House with respect and curiosity. Modest attire is advised in keeping with the spiritual nature of the site, and photography is permitted in public areas, though discretion is encouraged during prayer times.
The Visitor Centre provides educational materials and multilingual guides, ensuring that every guest can appreciate the rich narratives that surround the site.

Faith as a Pathway to Understanding

In Abu Dhabi, the Abrahamic Family House stands as a luminous landmark — a physical and symbolic reminder that at the heart of humanity lies a shared journey. Faith traditions that have shaped history and culture can, in this modern age, become catalysts for connection rather than conflict.
This complex does more than accommodate different religions; it celebrates their coexistence, inviting all who enter to reflect on the deeper ties that bind us — history, belief, and the enduring hope for peace. It is where architecture, spirituality, and diplomacy meet, inspiring awe and reflection. It invites us to pause, listen, and remember that unity is possible — not despite our differences, but because of them.

For those with young children, the campsite boasts camel riding adventures, allowing kids the chance to channel their inner Ibn Batutta and explore the desert on camel back, while there is also the opportunity to add a little colour to proceedings at the dedicated henna painting station.
As the afternoon unfolds into evening, allow yourself to indulge in a BBQ dinner; the campsite offers a wide range of grilled recipes, in addition to traditional teas or coffee. If you are so inclined, there is also the chance to watch some cultural performances such as a traditional Arabian Belly Dance, in addition to the Tanoura Dance and even a Fire Dance.
Once all the fun has subsided, guests can enjoy a restful night under the stars before sampling a delicious traditional breakfast. A truly unique desert camping experience.

Emirates Tours & Safari Desert Camp

Located in a similar area to Desert Rose Safari Camp (just a touch north of Dihan) sits this tranquil addition to Abu Dhabi’s desert camping scene.
The operator offers pick-up and drop-off options, ideal for those who might not want to drive out into the desert – or for those who do not drive a 4x4. The campsite provides visitors with a 6-hour fun-filled experience, with everything you would expect from a desert camping facility. Dune bashing, sandboarding, and a Bedouin-style bbq dinner come included, while there is also the chance to visit a camel farm to learn more about the iconic animal that was (and still is) so revered in Arabian culture.
The site also offers quad biking for an additional fee, as well as henna painting and dance performances after the sun sets. For those who wish to relax even further, the site offers a range of shisha options – ideal to unwind before climbing into your sleeping bag.

Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat Camp

This serene spot holds a distinct advantage over its competitors thanks to its location within a stone’s throw of the city itself, on Al Hudayriat Island. While not in the desert, it does offer other unique selling points such as its already-erected tents, so you don’t have to worry about putting yours up – or make sure you’ve collected every stake once you’ve packed up.
Accommodation options include the Chalet Tent; a spacious duplex complete with its own plunge pool and decking area. Able to sleep up to six people, this is a fantastic option for groups of friends or families. The site also offers the more traditional Al Najm Tent and Wave Tent options – covered over to shield you from the morning sun. Furthermore, there are the Blazar and Waghi selections, which are basically tents attached to a 4x4 and a mini campervan to give you that elusive on-the-road feel.
Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat also boasts a range of culinary options, with dining outlets sprinkled across the campsite. Of course, if you wish to cook for yourself to further recreate a traditional camping experience, you are more than welcome to do so.
With a dedicated children’s zone including activities such as table football and ping pong, the campsite also offers fitness and wellness classes, an outdoor cinema for movie nights and a range of aquatic activities guided by highly qualified staff. With all this on offer, Bab Al Nojoum easily represents one of the best camp sites in Abu Dhabi.
In today’s fast-paced world, an increasing number of people are seeking leisure activities that offer genuine disconnection, even if only for a short time. The following campsites have been thoughtfully selected to help visitors reconnect with nature, while also offering a wide range of activities to ease the stresses of daily life.
Hakkasan

The only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant in Abu Dhabi, Hakkasan is located at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental on Corniche Street and offers a range of time-honoured classics.
It’s easy to assume a restaurant with an expansive menu must know what it’s doing, but oftentimes the opposite is true – with many opting for quantity over quality. That is not the case at Hakkasan. With just four soup options on the a la carte menu, it’s obvious that the chefs take pride in their creations, and as such, you can expect some of the best fare in town. The Supreme Dim Sum offers an exceptional nod to tradition, while the highlight of the ‘Small Eat’ menu is undeniably the A5 Wagyu sirloin tartare. A commanding Fish and Seafood category gives way to a refined Poultry and Meat section, where a sophisticated Stone-grilled Japanese A5 Wagyu beef sirloin takes pride of place as the apex. With the Tofu and Vegetable and Rice and Noodle sections rounding out the menu, this elegant restaurant also presents an inviting Signature menu for AED 500.
The restaurant also features a stylish terrace overlooking the grounds of the grand Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental – the ideal location to enjoy a bespoke cocktail while simultaneously drinking in the views of the impressive Abu Dhabi skyline.

Authentic and delicious, the menu offers all the biggest hits, such as an exceptional Chicken Xiao Long Bao, an incomparable Chicken Wonton Soup and some delectable Prawn Dumplings. With a whole range of sumptuous wok-fried Signature dishes such as the Steamed Fresh Sea Bass and the Kung Pao Chicken, this culinary powerhouse continues to push the envelope when it comes to Chinese food in Abu Dhabi.

New City Palace

While New City Palace represents a more affordable option, the quality on display does not suffer. Located on Al Falah Street in the heart of the city, this charming Chinese is the epitome of a family restaurant. Family-run itself, it caters to many of the neighbourhood's Chinese residents, and the friendly staff will help you pick out the best the menu has to offer to match your tastes.
With a focus on sharing thanks to the sizeable portions, the menu boasts appetisers and soups which hark back to the motherland, while the Seafood menu offers an exceptional Ma La Crayfish dish among other things. A captivating Chicken and Duck section will leave you spoilt for choice, while the Rice, Noodles and Dim Sum categories demand attention.
Whatever you choose during your visit to New City Palace, you won’t be disappointed.
